BigLap Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 October 2026
BigLap ("we", "us", "the app") is a social and trip-planning app for caravan and van travellers in Australia. This page explains what information we collect, why, and how it's handled.
Information we collect
- Account information: your email address and password (stored securely, never in plain text), and any profile details you choose to add (name, avatar, bio).
- User content: posts, comments, messages, photos and videos you upload, stories, marketplace listings, trip plans, and reviews you write.
- Age check information: your date of birth when you sign up or confirm your age, and, in the BigLap phone apps, an age range from Apple or Google if one is available. See "Age checks" below for what we keep.
- Location data: trip and map data you choose to add, such as pinned stops, places you claim or review, and locations you attach to trips. Location is only collected when you actively use trip-planning or map features — we do not track your location in the background.
Age checks
BigLap is for people aged 16 and over. Australian law (the Online Safety Act 2021) requires social media services to take reasonable steps to stop people under 16 from having accounts, so we check the age of everyone who uses BigLap.
- Date of birth: we use it only to check that you're 16 or older, and we don't keep it. We keep only the result (16 or older, or under 16), how it was checked, and when.
- Unsuccessful sign-ups: if someone under 16 tries to sign up, we keep a scrambled (hashed) copy of the email address they used and a random identifier for their device for 7 days, so they can't immediately try again. We don't keep anything else about them.
- Apple and Google age signals: on iPhone, iPad and Android, the BigLap app may ask Apple (Declared Age Range) or Google Play (Age Signals) for your age range. You or your parent or guardian control whether this is shared. We receive only an age range (for example "16 to 17" or "18 and over") and how it was set, never your date of birth or ID. We use it only to check your age and keep only the result.
- Reports about underage accounts: anyone can report an account they think belongs to someone under 16. We keep the report (the account named, the reporter's connection to them, any details given, and an email address if the reporter chooses to give one) so our moderators can review it.
- Paused accounts: if an account belongs to someone under 16, we pause it. Other members can't see it, and nothing is deleted. The account holder can download their data or delete the account. If someone shows us they're 16 or older so we can restore an account, we record that we checked and how, but we don't keep copies of any ID.
- We keep a record of age decisions (what was decided, how, when, and by which moderator) as evidence of the steps we take. It is deleted along with your account.
How we use this information
We use the information above solely to operate and improve BigLap's features: your account, feed, chat, marketplace, and trip-planning tools. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising or tracking purposes.
Sharing
Content you post publicly within the app (posts, comments, reviews, marketplace listings) is visible to other users of the app, as expected for a social app. We do not share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Data retention and deletion
You can download a copy of your posts, photos, messages, trips and other content at any time, and delete your account at any time from within the app (Profile → Danger Zone). Deleting your account permanently removes your personal content and account details; some shared community content (such as a place you contributed to a shared map) may be anonymised rather than deleted, so the community information other users rely on remains intact.
Your rights
You can access, update, or delete your information at any time through the app. If you have questions or requests about your data, contact us using the details below.
